Online Degrees - Learning Adults
At one time, Western society thought adults couldn't learn. And it's often said that adults have a harder time fully grasping new knowledge, like a new language, for example. Although it may take a little extra effort for adults to learn, people of all ages are constantly learning-everyone is always in the process of trying to make sense of new experiences and gain understanding.
Adults are indeed unique learners. They are autonomous, and the Internet has made them much more self-directed. They bring many more experiences and knowledge to the table than a child or teen brings to the classroom. Adults tend to be much more goal-oriented; if they enroll in an online degree program, they like to know when exactly they are going to be finished and what it will take to obtain their online degree. Time is of the essence. They are relevancy-oriented, wanting to be sure there is a reason or a point to what they are learning and they like to see their learning applied in a practical way.
Children must go to school and are essentially coerced into learning with no choice, but adults choose to gain new knowledge, and there are many reasons for this. Professionally, the most basic reason for an adult to learn is to fulfill a requirement or guideline of some sort or to learn in order to advance in position. On a personal level, adults learn as a way to meet new people and make new friendships, to stimulate their bored minds or simply to learn for the sake of learning.
Adults, however, need to make sense of how they're making sense. Doing this requires knowledge of the different ways, styles, of learning. The use of the Internet has shifted the landscape of these learning styles. For kinesthetic learners, how can they make the most of their online degree program that requires them to sit in front of the computer rather than acting out a situation in a classroom? Or those who learn best by listening, what can they do to make the pictures on their computer screen more effective in the learning process? The answers to these questions lie within knowing and understanding the intricacies of learning styles and online degrees.
