Online Degrees - Style Tips

Regardless of your style, there are a few things that any student can do to prepare themselves and ensure a more effective learning experience.

  • Be aware. Know the expectations and time frames. Know your learning style so that you can accommodate it.
  • Orientate. If you're taking an online degree program, you will often have to go through a number of hoops before you reach your classroom-the computer, the Web, the classroom, the software, the discussion group, etc. Be sure you know how to get there.
  • Discipline. If you know the expectations, and time frames, follow them. Complete assignments accordingly.
  • Organize. Allow yourself time to finish assignments and to study for exams. How you organize and when you arrange time will depend on your learning style.
  • Self-direct. This might be more difficult for the older learner, if they prefer to be told what to do. However, you can motivate yourself by making lists and goals, and if you need help, ask. A good instructor will accommodate your learning style and needs.

Specific styles can be maximized. If you are a visual/verbal learner, use different highlighters to code information. Don't get frustrated if your instructor or computer screen is only using diagrams and charts. Have a pen handy to write out short phrases and sentences that will help you remember and learn later. Transfer these written notes into your computer as this method will help your linear thinking. Use flashcards with notes on them to prepare for tests.
